Besides gaining 2.5 Pro yesterday, the Gemini app is finally doing a better job of remembering what model you selected.

If you close Gemini and reopen — let’s say — an hour later, the Android app remembers what model you chose for a new chat. However, if the Google app was force stopped (which is admittedly on the rare side), the model picker would reset to the first one on that list.

With the latest Google app beta, we’re seeing your model selection persist through a force stop and device restart. We first noticed this yesterday with Gemini 2.5 Pro (experimental) remaining instead of falling back to 2.0 Flash.

This is a rather nice quality of life improvement, especially if you’re ready to use the latest Gemini Advanced model or just 2.0 Flash Thinking (experimental), which is available to all (free) users.

Google app 16.11 is currently in beta on Android and should enter the stable channel in the next week or so.

We’re all seeing this persistent behavior on gemini.google.com across multiple tabs and devices. This is not yet live on the iPhone app.
