Following Android back in July, Google Maps is now rolling out a sheet-based redesign that replaces most fullscreen UIs in the iPhone app.
Upon opening the map, you’ll notice that all bottom sheets in the app feature more rounded corners. After tapping on a place listing and sliding all the way up, the map remains visible at the top behind the status bar. This sliver helps preserve context as you navigate through the app.
The other big usability change is that you no longer close listings by tapping a back button at the left side of the search bar. Instead, there’s a new ‘x’ in the right corner of the sheet next to the share shortcut, while search has been removed. This should aid reachability and one-handed usage, while this behavior also matches Apple Maps.
Old (Android) vs. new (iOS)
window.adSlotsConfig = window.adSlotsConfig || [];
adSlotsConfig.push( {
slotID: ‘/1049447/Outbrain’,
slotName: ‘div-gpt-ad-outbrain-ad-664476’,
sizes: [300, 250],
slotPosition: ‘mid_article’
} );

Meanwhile, Google Maps has redesigned the directions UI after tapping the floating action button. The initial page for entering a destination is unchanged and remains fullscreen.
However, once a location is entered, the top of the screen just shows the start/end location in a floating rectangle. The mode transportation switcher has been moved to the bottom for improved reach.
Google widely rolled out this change in July on Android, and we’re now seeing this sheet redesign in Google Maps for iPhone with version 25.10.2 today.
