While foldable phones have been on the market for quite some time now, the idea of a foldable e-ink reader has somehow not been produced until just now, as Chinese brand mooInk has just launched the “V.”
Packing an 8-inch e-ink display (built in collaboration with E Ink), the mooInk V is the world’s first foldable e-reader. The device doesn’t have a set release date or price, but the company says (via The Verge) that it’s been working on this concept for nine years now.
The mooInk V is built with an aluminum-magnesium alloy and foldables with a gap at the center, but is designed to be used either fully unfolded or at a 90-degree angle to make it feel more like an actual paper book. mooInk explains (translated):
mooInk V will be the first e-paper product to introduce pad bending technology to meet the needs of narrow bezel design. It weighs about 255 grams and can be folded in half along the long side. It has two reading angles: 180 degrees and 90 degrees, making the experience closer to that of a paper book. From the content to the appearance, it is a complete “book”.
The color display can apparently handle over 50,000 shades of color at a resolution of 300ppi.

Some of mooInk’s other e-readers are powered by Android, so it stands to reason that this one is too, but it hasn’t been explicitly confirmed just yet.
Again, no pricing or release dates have been announced just yet, but this is certainly a category we hope to see more of in the future.
