YouTube for Android TV has a new dual-column channel side menu that obscures less of the content you’re trying to watch.

When you are watching a YouTube video on Android TV or Google TV, you can use your remote to quickly check out the channel that uploaded the video, subscribe, become a member or go and view the channel in its entirety.

For a long time, a floating card-style menu would appear and overlay the video, obscuring some content until you dismissed it or used one of the on-screen options. It seems that YouTube is not only changing the channel-side menu layout but also the animation to better fit the slew of Material You changes added over the past 18-24 months.

The new menu slightly minimizes the currently playing video, offering the same controls but no longer blocking off the right side of the image with a large channel card.

window.adSlotsConfig = window.adSlotsConfig || [];

adSlotsConfig.push( {
slotID: ‘/1049447/Outbrain’,
slotName: ‘div-gpt-ad-outbrain-ad-644938’,
sizes: [300, 250],
slotPosition: ‘mid_article’
} );

This change makes a huge difference and mimics the video details tab and comments section layout, which also minimizes the currently playing video so that you can watch without distraction. Google states that the original change was to strike “the right balance between interactivity and immersion.” By adding this final touch, it helps tie things all together.

You can see the new dual-column channel side menu in action below versus the old animation that is still present on most devices:

We have spotted this on Google TV Streamer and Chromecast with Google TV hardware, but it’s not clear how widely the change has rolled out. If you are seeing the updated menu, let us know in the comments section below.
